How Can You Save Money With An Energy-Efficient Home?

If you are looking for a home improvement project or want to remodel your kitchen or bathroom it can pay to use energy-efficient appliances, windows, installation, lighting and light fixtures, and heating and cooling units such as a new air conditioner or furnace or space heater.

The federal government is offering several incentives and tax credits for installing new energy-efficient appliances in your home.

These tax credits can offset most of the higher costs of the new appliances. And then the appliances themselves can also pay you back in a short period of time with their cost savings and lower electricity bills.

When shopping for energy-efficient appliances from GE (General Electric), Kenmore, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and Maytag be sure to look for the Energy Star label.

Just to give you an example, Energy Star qualified refrigerators are required to be 20% more energy-efficient than the minimum federal standards.

So they will use much less energy and you can rest easy knowing you will do your part to help reduce our impact on the environment.

One buying tip is to look for a refrigerator with a top mounted freezer. They use less energy than bottom mount or side-by-side models.

The next way you can save is by replacing your windows with energy-efficient windows and installing new insulation in the surrounding walls. You want to look for reflective insulation, also known as radiant barrier, which can help you save money if you live in a hot and sunny climate.

These can pay for themselves by lowering your heating and cooling bills in a short period of time. And who wouldn't be happier with a lower energy bill during the hottest time of the year?

One final small way is with CFL's - compact fluorescent light bulbs. These energy-efficient light bulbs can provide just as much light as a regular light bulbs for a fraction of the cost and can last for years without needing replacement.

Each one you replace can save approximately $30 over its lifetime and pay for itself in about six months.

Another bonus is that prices have dropped dramatically on CFL's lately. You can buy them in bulk online and then replace all the lighting in your home.

You can make these small upgrades affordably and start living in an energy efficient home today.

You will enjoy lower energy bills, a cooler home during the summer, and a warmer home during the winter, more money in your pocket, and peace of mind knowing you are doing your part to go green without sacrificing your standard of living and protecting the environment for future generations.

This site seems to be very useful. I just moved in to my own house-and the hardest part was trying to get all the appliances i needed. I really want to be as energy efficient as i can be. I'm very "green". I spent a month looking at random sites and having no luck. I am sending this site to my soon to be roommate so we can better pick out a set. The layout of this site is really nice-very easy to use. The colors are really nice too, they don't clash too badly and it's interesting to spend time and look at. The reviews show everything I need to know.

I am really happy I found this article. My energy bills are, well, terrifying to open. I spend way too much and I really need to figure out how to be more conservative with my energy use. I can not believe I forgot to look for an Energy Star approved appliance when I was out buying my fridge and washing machine, and I ended up buying some huge energy wasters. I did not even realize they were not energy star appliances until I read this article and checked them. I am definitely going to look into those fluorescent light bulbs too. This is a really good post, thanks a lot!

nowadays we should be so careful during buying electrical appliances because it not only affecting out pocket but also the environment. if we try to save energy now then our future will be safe and our child's future also good, otherwise there is no future for us. i am filling that for our energy requirement we should switch over to natural resources and that encouragement should be initiated by government. my personal experience for energy saving is that i always try to by CFL bulb and for other electrical appliances i try to see the how much stars it has? and that way i try to save my money.

The article is really enlightening and gives an insight into the various methods through which we can conserve energy. Energy conservation is the duty of everyone and should be voluntary. Not only are we contributing towards the environment but also we are saving a lot of money as rightly pointed out in the article. I have ensured that all the lights in my new flat are CFL lamps and also got further inputs on energy conservation from this article. The write deserves praise for this article and it should be given wide publicity. I also have a suggestion that governments must encourage energy conservation by ensuring that energy saving home appliances like refrigerators, ACs etc. are available at a cheaper price when compared to other ones.

Energy Efficient Blackout Curtains

By George Halt
When most people think about room darkening curtains, they are focused on the light-blocking properties of the curtains. Also called "blackout curtains", these window treatments are more often considered for how to make a room dark for a home theater or media room, or how to block light from a bedroom to allow better sleep during the day.
