Energy Efficient Furnaces And Boilers - Save Some Green, Get A Tax Credit

It is no secret that environmental concerns are weighing heavy on the hearts of many Americans, including politicians who set policies for the country.  In order for these politicians to address some of these issues, and to provide some welcome and popular tax breaks in the process, they have created a series of tax breaks that reward people for using energy efficient appliances and mechanical systems, including HVAC systems, in their homes.

The federal government has allowed for a tax credit of up to $1,500 on the purchase and installation costs of certain Energy Efficient Furnaces And Boilers.  As with most tax credits, this one has terms, conditions, and a lot of strings attached.  If you're thinking about taking advantage of the tax savings, you will need to do your homework to be sure that your proposed system will qualify for the credit.First, you will need to know the AFUE rating of your proposed Energy Efficient Furnaces And Boilers.

For natural gas or propane furnaces, look for an AFUE of 95 or greater.  Oil furnaces must have AFUE of 90 or better, and the same is true for gas, propane, and oil hot water boilers. The tax credit is only available for systems installed in your principal residence (no vacation homes or investment properties will qualify) between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.

You will need to file an additional form with your tax return, and you'll also need certification from the manufacturer (along with receipts for your expenses) in order to claim the credit.  A little homework in this area will go a long way!Tax credits are one of the most desirable tax benefits.  Most tax benefits take the form of deductions, which subtract the amount of the benefit from the income that the government considers taxable.  This is good, but tax credits give far better savings.

Tax credits, in contrast, subtract the amount of the tax benefit from your total tax bill; instead of saving a percentage of the benefit as with a deduction, you get to save the full amount.  Beyond the tax savings, using Energy Efficient Furnaces And Boilers will also help to lower your utility bills for heating your home in the first place, making them a very attractive option for any homeowner who is looking to save some green in terms of both dollars and the environment!
